Big Peaks, Big Sky
I don't know what I expected when I visited Glacier Bay, but this wasn't it. I was looking forward to seeing whales, seals and birds. Maybe I would see a dolphin or two. I knew I would be seeing a glacier, but I had pictured it as being something like a big smooth skating rink of ice. Perhaps it would be slippery, slick and very, very cold. But when I took this picture, it was in the hope of capturing a bit of the awe I was feeling at the time. There was no wind and it actually wasn't that cold. It was quiet, and the thing that stretched before me was far from being slippery. The jagged river of ice seemed to disappear in the distance as it was swallowed up by the even larger teeth of the mountains. I didn't expect the variety of colors either. Blues, whites, blacks, grays, browns. All of these hues butted up against each other and reaching to touch the cloudless sky. This is a photo of Glacier Bay, but it is more a photo of mountains, sky, ice, and the vastness of life.
